Supply Chain Keynote: Achieving Digital Transformation – Why Companies Needs to Invest in Procurement Now

Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group (ESAG) is one of the largest conglomerates in the United Arab Emirates, with 27 companies across retail, building and construction, along with industrial and joint ventures. Three years ago, they became the first large conglomerate in the UAE to migrate to SAP HANA.

They also took a strategic decision to establish centralised group supply chain department to streamline procurement, contracts and logistics processes and activities.

One of the major initiatives was to automate procure to pay process using SAP ARIBA as an enabler. Effecting such major change required establishing a common system that would work for all. The team had to identify processes involved and procedures followed by different companies, and re-engineer processes to successfully implement the change. This also involved redefining responsibilities and roles of key stakeholder.

In the past, there was no central database for storing supplier related information. ESAG now has a central database of all suppliers which records all transactions right from creating vendor code to capturing bank details for host-to-host payment process. The entire process is automated with no manual intervention and now provides sophisticated options such as automated review and approval workflow.

You’ll get great tips and advice on how to create a business case to get your organisation to invest in technology to transform procurement from clerical to value-adding, helping to enhance the reputation of the procurement function within the organisation.

Fishbowl: Customer Experience and Insights with SAP ARIBA

Why I Chose SAP ARIBA as our e-Procurement Transformation Tool

Following on from Irfan’s day one keynote, this session will dive deeper into the major challenges for procurement in organisations and will discuss ESAG’s journey to find a tool that was the right fit for the organisation’s needs.

Understand how they researched and assessed the right tool for the job, then prepared for the implementation, including redefining responsibilities and roles of key stakeholders. Finally, hear what the benefits and lessons learnt have been now that they are up and running with ARIBA as their preferred e-Procurement tool.

Transforming the company’s procurement operations onto new ERP systems has been both challenging and rewarding; we have taken stock of where we are at, determined what’s working well and where we still face procurement process / systems challenges, this journey is far from over.

Learn about our journey to date and our plans for the future to deliver:

  • Enhanced procurement user experience
  • Improved procurement service delivery
  • Procurement compliance uplift
  • Increased procurement process efficiency

Extraordinary & Enduring Cultures – How to Attract the Best People and Keep Them

Ever wondered whether it’s possible to attract industry-best employees; keep them the longest; and get the best output from the rest of your people?

Paddy Upton is a world-leading expert in human performance. His work is disruptive and despite two masters’ degrees and a decade of research into traditional performance, Paddy became accustomed to “That’s interesting but it won’t work”.

But in 2009 his out-of-the-box leadership approach got the attention of a struggling Indian cricket team. In 2010 his coaching propelled the Indian team to become World Test Cricket Champions and to win the 2011 ICC World Cup. Soon afterwards Paddy helped the South African Cricket Team become the first team ever to simultaneously hold the World No. 1 ranking in all three formats of the game. Sports leadership experts began to take notice, elevating Paddy to being recognised as one of the most innovative human performance coaches in the sporting world.

In this fascinating talk, Paddy discusses how to create an extraordinary and enduring culture in your team or organisation:

  • Harness collective intelligence (wisdom of the group)
  • Learn fast and make smart decisions
  • Build confidence, focus the mind and understand positive psychology
  • Extract the value from failure (after failure, a compliment is over 3x more effective than a reprimand)

Paddy weaves leadership insights from his work in International cricket, including coaching the Sydney Thunder to win the 2016 Big Bash League in 2016, and his work with CEOs and senior leadership teams. He has four university degrees, is a Professor of Practice at Deakin University and has worked as a mind coach to Olympic athletes from 11 different sports.

Panel: Nurturing a Gender Diverse Workforce

It’s no secret that workforce gender balance is a challenge for both heavy industries and the tech world. When these worlds collide for Enterprise Asset Management and Supply Chain the imbalance seems even greater. The gender split among the Mastering SAP attendees could easily be viewed as a reflection of the imbalance in these industries. Many leaders are struggling to know how to address the imbalance and just where to begin, but it is naive to believe this is just the way it is and dismiss the power that organisations have to make a change. This panel discussion brings together senior leaders from organisations making leaps towards building a gender diverse asset management workforce of the future. They will unpack:

  • What are the barriers to females entering asset management and tech?
  • How they are implementing programs and initiatives that are driving results
  • What is the role of senior leadership in driving a step change in gender diversity?
  • Recruitment strategies and tools that can positively impact the targeting of female EAM talent
  • Best practice for sponsorship and mentoring programs
  • Effective talent pipelines and leadership development programs

Getting Data in Order to Move to S/4HANA OR… Remedying the Pains of Master Data Management

The objective of this talk will be to take you on a journey of a company that has been on SAP since 1995 but, like a lot of companies, has struggled to understand the “what, when, why, and how” of master data management. Until now. With the decision to begin moving the company onto the S/4HANA platform, master data quickly comes to the front of the queue. With many questions and typically, too few answers, we have begun to look for a tool that can help us prepare and correct the sins of the past before we take the S/4HANA step.

  • Identifying where the real issues are
  • Building a business case and a new strategy for your master data
  • Navigating and selecting a data governance tool that is right for you
  • Planning and preparing for data tool implementation
  • Considerations for data structures and S/4HANA Analytics opportunities
  • Changing the culture and mindsets for master data management

Thriving in the Digital Economy: Are You Digitising or Digitalising?

The digital economy has been both a significant positive trend in the world and a big headache for many entrepreneurs who do not want to fall behind. It is no longer enough for organisations to focus on process improvements or cost reduction. To thrive in the digital economy, it is critical to be able to look for new opportunities, find and exploit them. It is also essential to develop profound insights into customer journeys and new opportunities for how to serve customers better (and more frequently) in the future. Many of the opportunities emerge thanks to the latest trends in business, technology, and society.

In his session, Marek will talk about the significant difference between digitising and digitalising a business, and discuss where and when each of the two approaches is important. He will introduce “jobs-to-be-done” as a new way of looking at customer needs, creating a broader perspective beyond product features and industry boundaries. And finally, he will cover the concept of systemic ideation, allowing organisations to approach innovation in a much more predictable way. In his presentation, Marek will bring together the technology and business topics discussed during the conference, to help organisations develop successful strategies.

Realise Full Benefits of Factory Automation with SAP MII

This session covers the first phase of Parmalat Australia’s journey of Factory to Warehouse automation, focusing on the roles that SAP MII and SAP PCO play in the delivery of robust connectivity, rich functions and framework for the future.

Key drivers for this project included: process automation, improved data accuracy, reduction in labour, SAP Integration, real-time manufacturing data and capturing downtime at source. It also provided a platform/model to allow extension to other factories, framework to build better analytics and improved Track & Trace to pallet level.

Tangible results achieved so far is the 2-way integration of SAP - Factory floor (via MII), using Android tablet devices on each line and with real-time visibility of production at line level; plus the pallets of finished production are now automatically labelled and receipted into SAP (with substantial labour savings). In fact, labour savings per week have been greater than expected.

Clearly there are great benefits to be realised with Manufacturing automation, but don’t underestimate the risks. Geoff will guide you through the most important lessons learnt:

  • Full automation/integration projects are complex
  • Project must manage all stakeholders (internal & external)
  • Technical landscape options to deliver high availability (pros and cons of decentralised vs centralised options)
  • Challenges of merging engineering infrastructure with corporate IT
  • Security risks and business continuity plans must be considered
  • Cultural changes are challenging with automation
x
Using Blockchain to Democratise Your Supply Chain

Blockchain is a disruptive technology and many people are wary due to the association with Bitcoin. However, blockchain also provides the ability to democratise industry data on a public immutable general ledger.

SAP is embracing blockchain and co-innovation with customers to develop industry-based solutions. One very interesting Proof of Concept example is the Agri Commodity Trading Smart Contract platform, being positioned in Australia to simplify trading of commodities between agri partners and simplify settlements. Blockchain can transform what is currently a very onerous and manual process. Another benefit will be to provide visibility of the supply chain and visibility of where commodities originated and provide agri provenance.

Although still in exploratory phase, this platform will reduce manual intervention. Commodity vendors currently need to contact partners to sell or buy a given commodity based on demand. In the blockchain world, they define their requirements in a smart contract that is shared on general ledger that all partners trust. Since this is stored in Blockchain, the data is immutable and therefore partners can be reassured that prices or commodity values have not been modified post sharing on the platform.

Nick will also explore a Farm to Consumer case study and other current initiatives with customers such as Kellogg’s, Nestlé and Zespri. Nick will share insights on why these customers they have embarked on Blockchain POC’s and where they see the opportunities for blockchain in the future of Supply Chain.

Deep Dive: Are You Ready for SAP S/4HANA?

S/4HANA can revolutionise your business. But are you prepared to truly look under the hood and get fully committed to your real health? Are your exceptions really exceptions or are you choosing to fool yourself? If your house isn’t in order, S/4HANA won’t help you.

Pieter and Norm are highly regarded thought leaders in both SAP Enterprise Asset Management and Supply Chain & Procurement. Using cases studies and real examples, they will show you the importance of aligning: people, processes, business functions, leadership through to shop floor communication, and onboarding and education. It is vital to have ALL these in place before you super charge the pace of your data.

They will also guide you through these three critical key steps:

  • How to understand and adopt real process integration
  • What accountability and ownership really means
  • What best practice in performance and governance looks like

Design Thinking for the Most Important Project: Your Life

Designers create experiences and products, and solve problems using a methodology called design thinking. Look around your office or home – at the smartphone you may be holding, the chair you are sitting in or the coffee mug you are drinking from. Everything in our lives was designed by someone. Every design starts with a problem that a designer or a team of designers seeks to solve.

What if you could employ the same methods used to create amazing products? What if you could tackle your personal problems and design a well-lived and joyful life relative to your work, your health, your play and your relationships?

This session will apply and expand upon the work of Dan Evans and Bill Burnett, authors of “Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived and Joyful Life”. It will reveal a human-centred design thinking framework and design thinking tools. It will identify the designer’s mindset, skills and practices needed to tackle your biggest design challenge – your life! In doing so, this session will highlight the resources you need to gain greater self-awareness so that they can better understand your strengths, your unique learning opportunities, your values, and your “why”. It will also help you understand the habits necessary for supporting a healthy and happy life.

Riches to Rags – Christchurch City Council’s Asset Management Journey Post Earthquake Recovery

This session will share the significant learnings that the Christchurch City Council Asset Management team have gleaned following the earthquake that shook the city in 2011. The impact of the earthquake meant that proactive, long-term planning processes gave way to a reactive Asset Management culture.

By adopting the mantra, ‘competency at the core’ the team set out to make a step change and get the most from their existing assets while managing risk, building trust and ensuring data and systems provide efficiencies in planning activities. This was imperative to get the building blocks right, ahead of a huge company-wide change initiative for SAP including HEC/S4 and a myriad of other module changes.

A story of culture and mindset change.

  • Building the right team during organisation wide change to deliver an effective corporate AM group
  • Getting asset management to the top table in a way that had never been achieved before
  • Achieving cross organisation support for asset management
  • Attracting the right talent - attitude vs aptitude
  • Delivering a culture of change not just in AM, but for the organisation
  • Integrating and prioritising a backlog of program opportunities with other large programs in the organisation
  • Recognising that the information is an asset in and of itself
  • The right tools for the job - spreadsheets are evil
  • Deploying a training and awareness campaigns
  • Maintaining momentum - critical to realising the value proposal
  • OPEX-OPEX-OPEX – funding the program and realisation of savings.

The Future of Work – Maximising Workforce Utilisation

It’s very important to consider the people implications early on in any tech journey, especially as Fonterra enables new technologies and digitises its maintenance business. One such implication is the existing ‘wiring’ of our generation of people. How do you attract and retain people wired for change and agility, whilst not forgetting to consider additional wider business needs?

This subtle aspect of Fonterra’s workforce was made clear when they did a work shadowing exercise looking at Wrench time. They saw the typical incidental and waste activities to address based on what was put in front of their people. But the solution they opted to explore wasn't typical.

Fonterra piloted new mobile software to help improve administration of their SAP system at the point of work. This typically accounted for 14% incidental activity in an average technician’s day. Right off the bat they could demonstrate ROI for their technology investment. Plus, this kicked off a wider phased mobilised workforce journey with AI, Machine Learning, IoT, Spatial Modelling with GIS and HD UAV tech.

Chuck will unpack wrench time as a mature principle, and show you how more affordable technology can unlock better return on investment for reducing waste and/or incidental activity while improving front line information access.

  • Simple Technician Shadowing Methodology (Wrench Time Method)
  • Appreciation of the GUI
  • Enabling administration at the point of work
  • Focusing on integration of technology horizons
  • Considering Industry 4.0 tech enablement

To address this, in September 2016 Fonterra began an 18-month project to develop and build a centralised multi temperature distribution centre, which also included the implementation of SAP Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) into the Distribution Centre which opened in June 2017.

  • Building a realistic scope and timeline for changing a facility, system and people
  • Ensuring strong project management and building a high performing project team to deliver
  • The complexities and benefits of consolidating operations / business units (Combining multiple DCs into one)
  • Managing large amounts of change and risk for people, process, systems
  • Moving from SAP WM to EWM – process, security, testing, ERP integration
  • Understanding the differences and improvements between SAP WM to EWM

Secrets in Implementing EAM. What We Learned at TasNetworks and Why it Matters to You

TasNetworks is a Tasmanian state-owned corporation that supplies power from the generation source to homes and businesses. As part of an S/4HANA driven, business-wide transformation, a number of asset planning, works management and service delivery solutions have been implemented.

This wide-reaching implementation provided improvements across TasNetworks core power distribution assets, its telecoms division, and fleet and facilities management areas. Key to the success of the project was a core focus on prototyping, ensuring end users at TasNetworks were familiar with the proposed solutions early in their development phase.

TasNetworks EAM Team Lead, David Kruijver, and DXC Oxygen Solution Architect, Filippo Peverini will discuss how they implemented and integrated a range of solutions – including SAP Project and Portfolio Management, as well as budgeting, scheduling and mobility applications, quickly and effectively.

A deep understanding of the integration priorities combined with a philosophy of ‘keeping it simple’ allowed the implementation team to deliver outstanding results. Key highlights include optimising the use of SAP’s Multi Resource Scheduling solution, developing an outage management solution using standard SAP tools, and delivering a powerful, future-proofed Condition-Based Maintenance solution.

Mobility Deployed Without Consultants

Hydro Tasmania recently deployed a new mobility solution, following performance and useability issues with their existing application. They were also looking to eliminate difficulties with maintaining and supporting their existing solution internally.

This session will discuss how a new mobility solution was deployed to its users, utilising internal resources in a short time frame. Deployed in just 60 days by the internal team and requiring just two days external consulting input. The speed of deployment was assisted by selecting a product with extensive features set out of the box and a simple architecture, which the Hydro Tasmania team had existing skills in.

The solution includes offline works management, offline GIS maps, document management and a fast, robust sync process. Following roll out, it is expected that the application will be utilised by 120+ users, given the new application’s broader target audience.

Hear about the project deployment, the users’ feedback on the solution and see a demo of the final solution.

Working Towards a Siri for Maintenance – Future Opportunities for SAP EAM

Apple’s Siri program is built on ontologies, inference networks, dictionaries, and dialog models. A key behind-the-scenes enabler is their ontologies. What if we could develop an open, shared ontology for maintenance management?

Siri for Maintenance is the tagline for a project supported by the BHP Fellowship for Engineering for Remote Operations and an Alan Turing Institute Visiting Fellowship in the UK. The intent of Siri for Maintenance is to develop query capability for the natural language found in maintenance inspection and repair records to enable validation of predictive maintenance models and engineering design assumptions and to make the capability open, shared and extensible for the maintenance community.

By moving away from the prescriptive manner maintenance technicians currently document their observations, the project team see a future that harnesses rich information about the health of their assets and work completed, captured in the language and jargon of the maintainers. Modern data science methods will extract the information needed to create a positive feedback loop with the maintainers about the value of the data they collect.

Finally, the team aims to enable technicians to ask questions of the SAP maintenance logs when they are in the field using natural language queries. These two outcomes will transform the capability of technicians to contribute in an active and engaged way to the maintenance effort.

  • What are ontologies and why they could help to improve productivity in maintenance management
  • Examples of how they can support your ability to query your work order and other data in SAP
  • The ongoing global collaborative developments to make this all happen and how you can get involved

UX & Mobility – Navigating the Choice Overload… Mobility, SAP GUI, Fiori, WebDynPro, and Personas. Where to Begin?

SAP offers such an array of UI solutions that it can be challenging to know where to start. Precision Drilling spent over a year evaluating UI and mobility solutions, undertook multiple proof of concepts, and a full pilot in preparation for their S/4HANA implementation.

Mapping the different UI and application needs for both Field Users and Operations Support Staff played an important role in selecting the right solutions for the job. Numerous mobility options were considered; WebDynPro, Personas, Fiori… A perplexing choice to say the least!

Lisa will share the key points from the journey, lessons learnt and will demo the final product; a combination of Personas/Web GUI and a Mobile application for users in the field.

So You’ve Implemented S/4HANA…. What Now? Addressing Cultural Change and User Adoption

When Precision Drilling embarked on a greenfield S/4HANA implementation to replace a heavily customised legacy SAP, they adopted the guiding principle of standardising Asset Management processes across their global operations.

By using agile methodology, it was apparent that what might suit one division might not suit all. With differing cultures and maturity levels across the organisation’s asset management practices, there was a need to scale and adapt to achieve the cultural change required.

Sharing lessons from their successful S/4HANA implementation that went live in April 2018, Lisa will examine the key components for cultural change and user adoption.

  • How executive support and business engagement is critical to project success
  • The challenges with agile methodology and EAM
  • Preparing for change, then continuing change post go-live
  • Overcoming the challenges of process standardisation, with varying operating models

Building a Fit for “Our” Purpose Roadmap – Making Simple, Yet Significant Change for Business Benefits

Most SAP journeys start out with a period of significant change as the business learns a new system and comes to terms with more integrated processes. Implementation focuses on process and data with little time dedicated to user experience. Three years into Glencore Coal’s SAP journey the business was comfortable with SAP, however there was still significant scope for improving user engagement and efficiency.

Having invested substantially in SAP ECC, it was important that the solutions would use tools that the organisation already owned and could develop themselves. Improvements needed to be made without a move to HANA, S/4HANA or to require further investment in additional third-party solutions.

Next steps were based on a deep dive into users’ needs and designed to three core principles; Engagement, Efficiency and Reinforcing Business Process.

  • Company-wide survey to gain insights into user pain points and role-based needs
  • Developing simplified screens in SAP without customising SAP transactions, upgrades, or testing burden
  • Developing custom dashboards and screens, tailored to supervisor’s needs
  • Overcoming technical challenges with SAP Personas
  • Future opportunities for SAP Personas for asset management

Providing the Right Information to Make the Best Decisions – Best Practice in Continuous Data Improvement

As asset information managers, we must give our people the right information to make the best decisions in asset management. With technology evolving at such a rapid rate, it’s also important to have one eye on potential future requirements, such as greater integration with an Asset Intelligence Network, IoT devices and edge computing, as well as better reporting and Predictive Analytics.

So how do you effectively create a robust foundation for your valuable data and respond to changes?

As a large local government authority with around $25B in assets including roads, stormwater, structures, real estate and fleet – this was the question that Brisbane City Council wanted to address following their 2014 SAP implementation. This led to a two-year journey to implement SAP Information Steward to assist in managing the quality of their data. This session will share insights from their ongoing journey, including:

  • Implementing a framework to guide decision making for continual data review and updates
  • Establishing reportable criteria for data quality, in SAP Information Steward
  • Analysing non-SAP data sources that integrates with SAP, such as GIS data or other databases with Information Steward

Leveraging Fleet Monitoring Data for Risk Management and Safety Performance Improvement

Improving safety doesn’t have to be a resource intensive task, it can be tackled in a smart way.

One of the key challenges in the analysis of safety and risk data is collecting the data in the first place. Historically it used to be entered by employees and contractors manually on paper and with electronic forms, leaving room for uncertainty over the quality, frequency and consistency of data.

Having consistent and steady streams of safety data from connected devices and mobile platforms provides numerous possibilities for reliable analysis and insight building. The application of big data tools and machine learning techniques becomes possible, enabling safety professionals to take a truly proactive approach in reducing workers health and safety risks and incidents.

Learn how information streams from automated sources can be used to benefit safety and risk management processes, enabling big data analysis and machine learning benefits for the domain.

Sunday Session 1: Technical Objects

The technical objects are the basis of everything that we do in asset management, from maintenance through to analytics, and getting them set up correctly is the key input to achieving an effective asset management system. This session will describe the purpose, features and setup of the standard SAP functionality for Functional Locations, Equipment and BOMs to support asset management objectives for maintenance, rotables management, and analytics. Focus areas include asset structures / hierarchies, asset classification, and construction type.

Sunday Session 2: Regular Maintenance

Regular maintenance covers the planning and execution of any tasks that are performed on a repeated basis, whether based on time, measurement or ad hoc. Correctly set up and used, the standard SAP functionality for Measuring Points, Task Lists and Maintenance Plans provide the potential for significant improvements in the efficiency, repeatability and effectiveness in the management of asset maintenance work, and provide solutions for a wider range of repeated work scenarios than most people realise. Focus areas include gathering measurements, structuring task list libraries, and the powerful scheduling capabilities of maintenance plans.

Holistic Maintenance Execution. Permits and Isolation Are Our Responsibility Too

World class maintenance can’t be achieved in a silo. All business groups need to be reading the same play book. One of these disconnects is when Operations and the Permit Office don’t appreciate the impact they have on maintenance schedules, and likewise, maintenance planning and scheduling teams must accept that efficient and safe permitting and isolation is crucial for efficient execution.

Hear how ePAS provides intelligent, integrated, efficient, electronic permits and isolation. This session will draw upon a use case of how a large Australian Oil and Gas customer reduced paperwork in permitting by 98%, increased identification of hazards and controls by 1.5x and 4x respectively, and reduced preparation time in isolation schemes from 6 hours to 15 minutes.
